I think, but am not sure at all, that these genealogies are a US thing. I remember when I had some conference-break discussion and somebody referred to a researcher as being a "grand-child" of some other scholar. I took this to be literally and was really confused as that statement was wrong or my perception of the ages of the people was way off!
